As the third round of the Betsson-sponsored Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) regular season winds down, the standings are still packed with burning questions and high-stakes drama. Let’s break down the biggest recent storylines in the championship.

Status Quo at the Top and Bottom

Žalgiris Kaunas (22-1) is showing no signs of slowing down, continuing their absolute dominance in the regular season. Fresh off lifting the Citadele KMT Cup in February, the Kaunas powerhouse has racked up an active 18-game winning streak. There’s virtually no doubt that one of the hottest teams in Europe will enter the playoffs locked into the number one seed yet again.

At the other end of the spectrum, Jonava Hipocredit (4-18) finds themselves in a situation that is both familiar and desperate. Steponas Babrauskas’ squad sits dead last in ninth place, trailing the eighth and final playoff spot by three games. However, they've shown signs of life recently, picking up two morale-boosting wins.

The Top Four Takes Shape

Rytas Vilnius (14-8) is steadily shaking off a mid-winter slump. The capital city club first ended a long drought by returning to the Citadele KMT final, then showed tremendous grit to punch their ticket to the FIBA Basketball Champions League playoffs. To top it off, they've reclaimed the second spot in the LKL standings, which had been briefly hijacked by Neptunas Klaipeda.

The absolute headline-grabber was Ignas Sargiūnas’ mind-boggling performance against Lietkabelis Panevėžys. The guard put on a show for the ages, scoring exactly what’s on his jersey—a whopping 43 points. Even more absurdly, he missed just one shot the entire game, going 5-of-6 from inside the arc, a perfect 9-for-9 from downtown, and a flawless 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. He racked up a PIR (Performance Index Rating) of 58—a number untouched in the league for nearly 30 years.

Meanwhile, Neptūnas (13-9) hit a bit of a rough patch lately but remains a heavy favorite to secure a top-four finish. Šiauliai (12-10) is also keeping the pressure on and holding strong in that upper-tier battle.

Surprising Rookies and a Frustrated Nenad Čanak

Further down, we find Lietkabelis (10-12) and Gargždai (10-13) both sitting on ten wins. But while the latter are top-flight debutants pleasantly surprising everyone with their run, the former are deeply frustrated. Gargždai recently reeled off three straight home wins, slowly creeping up the standings. Meanwhile, the Panevėžys squad is still searching for its identity; after their latest defeat, head coach Nenad Čanak flat-out admitted that a top-three regular-season finish is now out of reach.

A Downward Spiral

Juventus Utena (8-14) is going through a rough patch, to say the least. Right before the Citadele KMT Final Four, things were looking up—they grabbed big wins in Vilnius and Šiauliai and extended head coach Kęstutis Kemzūra's contract. Since then, it's been a disaster. Juventus is the only team yet to win a single game in the third round, dropping all six of their contests.

Breathing down their necks is Nevėžis Kėdainiai (7-15). They've been consistently competitive and are on track to make a return to the postseason after a three-year hiatus. But with ten games still left on the schedule, Kėdainiai is eyeing an even higher climb up the table.
