The history of the league began on April 22, 1993 when coaches of eight leading Lithuanian clubs – Žalgiris Kaunas, Atletas Kaunas, Drobė Kaunas, Statyba Vilnius, Olimpas Plungė, Šilutė, Lietkabelis Panevėžys and Neptūnas Kaipėda – and representatives of the Šarunas Marčiulionis Basketball Foundation established the Lithuanian Basketball Association, the first professional sports organization in the country. The Association soon transformed into the Lithuanian Basketball League that we know today. Ten teams are taking part in the 2019-20 season:
