Double-OT drama: Neptunas upset Zalgiris again in Klaipeda
Zalgiris and Neptunas provided another memorable Betsafe LKL clash, with the Kazys Maksvytis-coached Klaipeda club handing the defending champions their second defeat of the campaign in a 98-93 double overtime thriller on Sunday.
The only team to beat the title-holders this season, Neptunas improved to a 14-3 record behind a 24-point performance from Kyle Weaver, shrinking the Zalgiris lead at the top of the standings to a single game.
The visitors from Kaunas had a chance to end it all in regulation, but Weaver forced extra time with a contested jumper over the outstretched arms of Brandon Davies. The tables flipped in the first extra period, with Arturas Milaknis keeping Zalgiris alive and forcing the second overtime with a clutch game-tying bucket on a crafty inbound play drawn up by Sarunas Jasikevicius.
Three-pointers from Gytis Masiulis and Lorenzo Williams proved enough to tip the scales in the favor of the home side in the last five minutes of a nail-biting 50-minute contest.
Tomas Delininkaitis was the second-leading scorer for Neptunas with 16 points, Masiulis collected 13 points, while Dziugas Slavinskas stole the spotlight with a career performance of 12 points and 8 rebounds.
For Zalgiris, Brandon Davies had a team-high of 17 points on 11-of-17 attempts from the free-throw line, as Nate Wolters and Edgaras Ulanovas chipped in with 12 points apiece in a losing effort.
