Thrilling LKL Season Opening: Žalgiris Sets Historic Record, Debutants Impress, and Dramatic Comebacks Unfold
The new season of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) sponsored by Betsson kicked off with a bang, delivering historic milestones and heart-stopping dramas down to the final buzzer.
The Champions’ Reign and a Historic Record
Defending champions Žalgiris Kaunas opened their campaign with absolute dominance. Led by Jonas Valančiūnas—returning to the LKL after a 14-year hiatus—and a deep supporting cast, Kaunas secured four consecutive victories. After comfortable road wins over Gargždai (98–77) and Neptūnas Klaipėda (93–69), Žalgiris defended home court convincingly against Šiauliai (101–82) and Lietkabelis Panevėžys (97–68).
The victory against Lietkabelis etched Žalgiris into the league’s history books: it marked their 39th consecutive LKL win spanning across two seasons, shattering the previous all-time record set back in 1998–1999.
Dream Debut in Tauragė and Gargždai’s Heroics
The opening stretch featured major surprises from the league’s underdogs.
Tauragė, the 34th franchise in LKL history, celebrated the grand opening of their brand-new arena with a thrilling 95–90 overtime victory over Hipocredit Jonava. Though they narrowly fell to experienced Lietkabelis (79–85) in their second outing, the newcomers proved they belong on the top-flight stage.
The narrative of the opening weeks belonged to Gargždai, who showcased resilience. After overcoming a 16-point deficit to defeat Šiauliai (90–79) and erasing a 17-point margin in the coastal derby against Neptūnas (87–78), Gargždai pulled off the biggest upset yet. On the road, they stunned reigning BCL champions, Rytas Vilnius, 105–102 in a high-scoring thriller, driven by point guard Jaquan Carlos, who posted a phenomenal 36 efficiency rating.
Mixed Fortunes Across the Board
Lietkabelis launched their season with drama, wiping out a 21-point deficit against Juventus Utena to win on an Ognjen Jaramaz game-winner at the buzzer (84–82), before dropping a tight decision to Šiauliai (77–86).
At the other end of the table, Nevėžis-Paskolų klubas Kėdainiai endured a rough start, remaining winless after setbacks against Jonava, Utena, and Klaipėda. Meanwhile, Neptūnas rebounded from early struggles with a commanding 89–62 blowout victory over Kėdainiai.
Through the first 17 games, the competition has set the tone for an unpredictable campaign.
